There were three major exhibitions in Gwangju Biennale 2000 : the main exhibition, a special exhibition, and a satellite exhibition. The theme of the main exhibition was "Man and Space." The exhibition space was divided into 5 rooms in order to display effectively the leading artists' works of different continents. The subdivided rooms were Asia, North America, Korea and Oceania, Europe and Africa, and Central and South America. In addition, a special section was prepared in each room. Including the special exhibit and satellite exhibit, there were a total of 12 exhibitions in the Gwangju Biennale 2000. Visitors found the way we display the works very harmonious, even though the works in 5 different rooms had clear regional distinctions. The works of Asian artists were exhibited in Japan after the Biennale.

New media art could be a very good means of expression because it was relatively easy
to express something through film. Also, new media art was the most democratic medium
of communication. It was also true that new media art is being abused and misused in our
society. Some voices criticize the ways new media art was used as propaganda. As an
alternative, people were making new media art that defined the very terms of new media
art making. But still, so many new media art was made for solely materialistic reasons.
As a result, the conflict among social groups was becoming more severe. The 3rd Gwangju
Biennale suggested an experimental way of self-expression using new media art and the
ways of utilizing new media arts' apparatus for democratic communication. The theme of
new media art, "A Scar," tried to portray the everyday life of an individual, scar from
history, and the existing, but not shared scar of contemporary society.
